HOW HOWARD HAPPENED. To celebrate Howard County’s 150th birthday, County Judge Brent Pinkerton is moving the county seat of government for one day to its original site, Center Point. The quorum court will hold its next meeting, Monday, April 17, on the anniversary. The meeting will take place in the community center at 11 a.m. This brass sign on the current courthouse lawn describes the county’s birth and the move of the county seat to Nashville.

On Monday, April 17, 2023, Howard County will be 150 years old.

County Judge Brent Pinkerton declared that the seat of government that day – along with the regular April meeting of the Howard County Quorum Court – would be in Center Point, the original county seat, in honor of the occasion.

The JPs in Monday’s regular meeting for March unanimously agreed after some joking from North County JP Kerry Strasner about whether to make the change permanent.

The meeting will be at 11 a.m. at the Center Point Community Center, and the public is invited.

The county was the next-to-last county to be formed in Arkansas. It was from parts of Sevier, Polk, Pike and Hempstead counties. The original seat of government was in Centre Point, and after an election in 1905 the county seat was moved to Nashville.
