DIERKS – Two people were arrested on drug charges after law enforcement went to serve a misdemeanor warrant in Dierks.
According to an affidavit prepared by Dierks Police Investigator John McKee, Wanda Campbell, 45, of Delight, and William Clyde Ward, 56, of Dierks, were arrested last month after deputies smelled an odor of marijuana.
On Jan. 23, Howard County Deputies Travis Turner and Joey Davis went to a home on Holly Avenue in Dierks to serve a misdemeanor warrant on Larry Morris.
“After knocking on the door of the residence, William Ward opened the door and the officers saw smoke and smelled the odor of marijuana. Upon asking if Morris was at the residence, Ward pointed at Morris who was inside the residence and he was taken into custody. Ward admitted that they had just smoked marijuana and pointed at a small metal smoking device laying on the coffee table in the living room of the residence. Ward consented to a search of his residence to Turner and Davis. Davis was given a small green purse to search…Davis found a small black bag inside of the green purse. The black bag contained two used glass smoking devices with burned residue inside, one Arkansas driver’s license issued to Wanda Campbell, one dollar bill folded up, and three syringes,” the affidavit stated.
According to the affidavit, Campbell admitted to the deputies that the contents of the purse belonged to her and she was taken into custody.
The deputies also stated that they found “two rifles, two black powder rifles and a shotgun.”
“Turner found a loaded syringe containing a cloudy liquid substance in the dress. The liquid is suspected to be methamphetamine,” the affidavit stated. Ward was also taken into custody. Law enforcement confirmed through dispatch that Ward was convicted of a felony in Sevier County in November 2000.
Campbell was arrested for possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. Ward was arrested for possession of firearms by certain persons, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Campbell and Ward were arraigned in Howard County Circuit Court on Jan. 27 before Judge Tom Cooper. Both entered not guilty pleas and their bonds were reduced to $15,000. The judge ordered them to return on March 16 for pretrial and on March 22 for trial.
