Friday night the Nashville
Scrappers took on the
Bauxite Miners in the final
regular season game of
the year. Nashville already
having the conference
championship under their
belt were fighting to keep
their record unblemished
as they looked forward to
the playoffs but the Miners
were more than just an easy
senior night game as they
gave the Scrappers a scare
in the first half but in the
end Nashville triumphed
42-21 and kept their record
a perfect 10-0 as the playoffs
loom ahead.
In the first quarter the
game was close. Nashville
scored the first points rather
early in the first quarter
at 9:35 left in the quarter
to bring it to 7-0. Around a
minute later the Miners answered
with an impressive
82 yard touchdown pass
and Bauxite converted on
the two point conversion
giving them their only lead
of the game 8-7. Nashville
got the ball back and drove
it down the field and with
5:18 left in the first quarter
quarterback Leonard Snell
rushed the ball for his first
of two rushing touchdowns
of the game. Nashville regained
the lead at 14-8. For
the rest of the quarter the
teams went back and forth
on offense and defense until
Bauxite was able to find and
opening and drive the ball
down to the goal line and
with :21 left in the quarter a
short run for a touchdown
and a failed two point conversion
tied the game at 14.
Nashville was able to score
in two quick plays to retake
the lead as the first quarter
expired.
In the second Nashville
had the lead at 21-14 and it
would not change. Neither
team was able to get any
scoring drive organized in
the second quarter. The
Bauxite and Nashville defense
were able to hold
each other from scoring
for a whole quarter giving
Nashville the one touchdown
lead going into halftime.
In the third quarter of
play the Scrappers were
able to hold the Miners to
zero points while Snell was
able to find his legs. Nashville
was able to score twice
in the quarter with one being
an impressive quarterback
run for 60 yards and a
touchdown that ultimately
brought Nashville’s lead to
35-14 with just :38 left in the
third quarter.
The final quarter of the
game also only saw 14 points
scored in it but one of those
scores came from the Miners.
After just 1:13 of playing
in the fourth quarter
Nashville was able to score
its final touchdown of the
game. The leading rusher of
the game scored his most
impressive touchdown of
the game on a 55 yard run
down the field building Nashville’s
lead to 42-14. Bauxite
was able to get its first score
since the first quarter and
final score of the game with
6:03 left to play on a goal line
run to bring the final score of
the game to 42-21.
Nashville was unable
to find a passing presence
during the game as Snell
went 4/10 for 80 yards and
zero touchdowns. The run
game secured the victory for
Nashville as the sophomore
running back Harris lead
the game in rushing with
129 yards on nine runs and
three touchdowns. Snell was
also able to break 100 yards
rushing and scored two
touchdowns with his feet.
Darius Hopkins was one yard
away from 100 yards rushing
and scored one touchdown.
Head Coach Mike Volarvich
said he thought his
team would play “A little
sluggish” like they did in
the first half because of the
long week that led up to
the game, “It was a long
week at school and there
was also bad weather so
we had to practice inside
a bit,” Volarvich said. With
the win the Scrappers are
now undefeated going into
the playoffs. They will face
Crossett on Friday at home
in the first playoff game of
the season.
