DUMAS – The Nashville Scrapperettes took the host team of their regional tournament, the Dumas Lady Bobcats, in a massive win Friday afternoon.
The game began very low scoring, with each team’s fielders making the most of opportunities to put batters out. Nashville did manage to get two in during the second inning, as KeeKee Richardson was brought in on a sacrifice play by Bailey Dougan and Brookelyen Cox scored on an error.
Aside from those two, the score remained flat into the fifth inning, when the Nashville girls put in a trio of runs with Alyssa Harrison and Cox both in on a line drive to center by Hannah White, and Dougan coming home by a gutsy bunt to the pitcher from Kendall Kirchhoff. This set the score at Nashville 5-0.
Dumas was again unable to make headway before the Scrapperettes took bat again, and the Nashville team took advantage of that, with Madison Miller running in on an error and Cox again coming in on a ground ball to third from Dougan. This made the score Nashville 7-0.
They also made big strides in the seventh, with Mattie Jamison putting a ground ball to short to bring in Madi Horton, Harrison knocking a line drive to get Kirchhoff home, Jamison making it on a sacrifice fly from Cox, Miller in on a line drive to center by Dougan, then Harrison and Dougan both running home on another line drive to center – this one from White. That set the Scrapperettes in an unassailable position, Nashville 13-0.
The Lady Bobcats were determined to assail that position, though, and struggled through to put in a pair of runners in the final moments of the game, though the outcome was by then determined. Final score, Nashville 13-2.
The story of the game was Anna Kesterson’s pitching, with a massive ten strikeouts and an insane 90 percent strike rate on 51 pitches. While she was credited the win, the batters for the team should also be recognized, staring with White, who posted five RBIs on three hits.
The team now goes on to face familiar rival Mena in their next round of the regional tournament. The Scrapperettes and the Lady Bearcats have squared off twice so far this season, each time resulting in a loss for Nashville – something the team hopes not to repeat in a third meeting. The time of their game will be subject to the weather sweeping the state.
