After hearing a report from SWA PAWS spokesperson Jenna Pope, the Nashville City Council on Monday voted to amend animal control ordinance language to say that animals in the pound that are not reclaimed or are deemed abandoned “can” be euthanized instead of “will” be euthanized.
The organization’s secretary and spokesperson also read numbers showing a big increase in the number of adoptions of dogs and cats along with a decrease in the number of euthanizations.
She also asked for some fencing changes to improve chances for adoptions.
Fire Marshal Justin Thornton asked for, and got, council approval to donate some old and unused equipment to area rural fire departments.
New Public Works Director Jonathan Roquet said he was still getting to know his crew and familiarize himself. Mayor Larry Dunaway, the former PWD director, gave an update on ongoing projects.
Early in the meeting Mayor Dunaway addressed late payments to the seven-city animal control department. The City of Prescott is not making regular payments, and is contributing about one third of animals picked up. He said that the city had suspended service to Prescott and would address this problem.
Council members present for September’s regular meeting included Lynn Dyer, Kathy Combs, Carol Mitchell, Charles Pinkston, Kay Gathright, William Turley, Kahlid Benson, Brent Thompson, Donna Harwell and Joe Hoen.
