Jaguars rain on Lion parade

MCCRORY – The Mount Ida Lions were unable to overcome the effects of four turnovers as the 2015 season came to an end with a 16-7 loss at the hands of the McCrory Jaguars.
The evenly matched teams battled up and down the field as rain fell from start to finish. Mount Ida had 45 carries to McCrory’s 46 with Mount Ida rushing for 190 yards and McCrory running for 198.
Cody Robertson carried the ball 18 times for 82 yards with Jesse Lowry getting 12 carries for 62 yards. Caleb Jones had 10 carries for 31 yards and T.J. Wilson had five carries for 15 yards and a touchdown.
The Lions have dominated opposing teams in the turnover category all season long, but they found themselves on the short end with four lost fumbles.
McCrory opened the game with a bang, going 61 yards in two plays. They reached the end zone in only 33 seconds thanks to a 41 yard run by Ken Dewitt. The PAT was good and they held an early seven point lead.
Mount Ida opened the ensuing series on their own 48 yard line. They settled in to their familiar ground and pound style of football, moving the ball to the McCrory 19 yard line. Things turned south for the Lions on second and 10 from the 19 when the ball popped loose and the Jaquars fell on it.
The Lion defense stiffened in the next series,forcing a three and out for McCrory.
The Mount Ida offense went to work, launching a 60 yard 11 play drive that ended in a one yard touchdown run by T.J. Wilson. Tyler Allenbrand hit the PAT to tie things up at seven with 23 seconds to go in the first quarter.
web football 2The second quarter was a defensive affair that saw the Lions stop McCrory three times, but fell victim to the fumble bug twice. The first half ended in a 7-7 tie.
Mount Ida opened the second half with the ball on their own 23 yard line. They were able to move the chains on a 12 yard run by Caleb Jones, but was forced to punt four plays later. A high snap on the punt gave McCrory a short field on the Mount Ida 20.
The Lion defense stood tall, stopping the Jaguars on the 10 yard line and forcing them to attempt a field goal. The 27 yard attempt was good and the Jaguars led the game 10-7 at the 6:53 mark in the third.
Mount Ida was able to stop the Jaguars on a fourth and three on the Lion 24 in the fourth quarter, but fumbled the ball on the next play from scrimmage.
McCrory added another touchdown to their lead with 42 seconds left on a one yard run by C. Campbell. McCrory come up short on the ensuing two point conversion, but held on to win the game 16-7.
The Mount Ida Lions end the 2015 season with a 12-1 record. They were undefeated 7-2A Conference Champions.
