The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) will be holding a Grave Dedication Ceremony this Thursday, November 5 at 11 a.m. in Murfreesboro.
The dedication will be held at the Murfreesboro Cemetery on School Street (behind the Murfreesboro Fire Station) for Lt. William Jenkins (1762-1842).
In 1836 Arkansas became a state and in 1837 75-year-old Lt. Jenkins moved to Murfreesboro with his son, Reverend Jesse Jenkins, who was the first Methodist minister in the city.
In 1842 80-year-old Lt. Jenkins passed and was the second person to be buried in the Murfreesboro Cemetery. In 1846 Reverend Jesse Jenkins moved to Ouachita County.
The event is sponsored by the Arkadelphia Chapter of the DAR and co-hosted by Mine Creek-Paraclifta DAR. Taps will be played by the Arkadelphia High School JROTC Color Guard.
A reception will follow the grave dedication in the Community Room of the Murfreesboro Municipal Building.
