Burt Weems, 92, went to be with the Lord on Oct. 18, 2026.
Burt was born April 15, 1934, in Idabel, Okla., to Dewey and Edith Weems. Burt grew up in Nashville, Ark., and graduated from Nashville High School in 1952. He went on to Tulsa Junior College and Little Rock Junior College and finished his degrees at Oklahoma East Central State University, graduating with a degree in education and a master’s degree in education administration. Burt was then drafted into the U.S. Army, where he became the athletic department director in Giessen, Germany. He played semi-pro basketball with the German Nationals.
Burt had a passion for education and sports as a teacher and coach at Bellevue, Mansfield, Wichita Falls, Texas, and Terrell, Okla. He then became principal at Boswell High School from 1971-1984. He was also a principal and assistant superintendent at Red Oak ISD from 1984-1989. Burt was an educator for 31 years.
Upon retirement, Burt started a second career selling insurance and worked as a substitute teacher at Lake Worth, Saginaw, and Boswell High Schools. He became known as the “singing substitute”! He also led music at several churches throughout his life. One of his greatest joys in life was singing. He loved singing for friends, family, students, and strangers. He even recorded a gospel album in 1970. He was active with the Kiwanis Club, served as president of the Retired Teachers Association of Saginaw, and was a Mason. He had an incredible network of friends. He never met a stranger and always had a great story ready to tell.
He was active in the churches he attended and developed many friendships at First Baptist Church Saginaw, Hampton Road Baptist Church, and Cross Church.
Burt lived out his Christian faith daily and always had a song in his heart for others to hear.
