Mine Creek Revelations: Earthquake Advice

YES, I AM STILL HERE peeking out my window on Main Street, and I gladly share this information with you.

WHAT TO DO IN CASE of an earthquake. Prompted by the extent of our weird weather this year, I began looking on the Internet for what we should here if the earth begins to shake. Our neighbors in Oklahoma have had some recent tremblors and after all, we’re not that far from the New Madrid Fault.

According to the article, there are three things to do if you are caught in an earthquake:

1. Drop to the ground.

2. Take cover under something like a desk or table.

3. Hold on until the shaking stops.

If you are in your buggy stay inside it, but don’t park under a tree or power line.

My best advice is to stay away from Oklahoma. Used to be I only went to Oklahoma when I needed to replenish my supply of adult beverages. But now we’ve got Footsie’s, Cowlingville and Fulton.

I KNOW THAT both of my regular readers will be surprised that I recently committed a stoopid act.

I was rummaging around in my bachelor kitchen looking for one of those sorta clear plastic containers to put leftover food in.

What do you call those things? My co-workers helpfully suggest “Food storage containers.” Thanks.

I needed just one container so that I could take some leftover gumbo to a brother.

Anyway, let me tell you  how many containers I could find:

Zero, Zip, Nein, Nada, None.

There were loads and loads of lids. But no containers.

I went through every cabinet and storage space looking. Please!! Let there be just one useable container, I begged.

In a rage I threwALL lids and containers into a filthy trashcart. Not my own thy trashcart, mind you. No, I drove under cover of darkness to someone else’s filthy trashcart. When I returned home I congratulated myself for this clever way of gaining extra storage space.

Then I went to the spare bedroom which I am wisely using as a storage room. There, on my late wife’s grandmother’s bed were ….. about two dozen containers. Many sizes. Clean and in perfect condition. Containers only.

I’m trying to work up courage to sneak back to that other filthy trashcart to retrieve just a few of the lids.

ANOTHER SURE SIGN of the ‘End Times.’

A group of students at Notre Dame University wanted to form an “Athiest, Agnostic and Questioning Students Club” complete with university funding so they could bring in speakers and hold events in facilities that they wanted the university to provide.

The students say they are surprised and dismayed their request was denied. What? Are these all remedial college students? They are at the best-known Catholic university in the world and they actually thought the university would encourage their insanity.

They should enroll instead at the University of Texas. As we all know, the Devil says “Hook ‘em.”

ANIMAL CRACKERS: It has taken a few weeks and two bags of raw, unshelled peanuts, but ‘my’ bluejays seem to have returned to the Peanut Table on the patio.

And I do believe that ‘our’ Mississippi Kites have departed to wherever they go just before hot weather lets up. I sure hope they are right about the weather. I have spent several mornings on the patio scanning the skies for them. As soon as this newspaper issue comes off the press I’ll probably spot one circling the neighborhood buffet table.

UPDATE. I spotted something gliding around Tuesday, but it was a hawk.

And even though my granddaughter removed about a half-dozen old nests from inside the Bluebird Box in June no prospective Bluebird parents have come by for a look.

Maybe it’ll happen next spring. I hope to be here.

AND SOME OTHER THINGS I have learned:

1. The Universal Law of Commercial Marketing Strategy. As soon as you find a product that you really like and can afford, “they” will stop making it, or Walmarat will re-arrange the shelves.
