The Nashville chapter of Philanthropic Educational Organization (PEO) Sisterhood is continuing the nonprofit’s tradition of helping women pursue educational goals and recently raised more than $1,500 for scholarships by selling chances on a freezer stocked full of food.

PEO has been “celebrating women helping women reach for the stars” for more than 150 years, according to AM Chapter President Telia Dunn.

“Since its inception in 1869, the nonprofit organization has helped more than 122,000 women pursue educational goals by providing nearly $415 million in grants, scholarships, awards and loans. The Sisterhood also owns and supports Cottey College,” according to information provided by Dunn.

Dunn added that in addition to the educational philanthropies, the PEO Sisterhood provides a framework of support and community for all members.

“What started with a bond of friendship among seven women in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, is now one of the oldest women’s organization in North America with nearly 5,600 chapters.” Locally, Dunn said the group “supports a scholarship annually to a senior Nashville girl for $1,500. We also sponsor a girl to attend Girl’s State annually.

“We are currently working on a single mom’s scholarship for UA Cossatot. We support various community organizations and opportunities as well.”

The winner of this year’s stocked freezer is the Manuel Mendez family.

“We want to thank the community and surrounding areas for supporting our recent fundraiser.”
