Mineral Springs will get a new turf football field and major stadium renovations as a result of unanimous votes by the school board, Monday night.

The artificial turf will cost $537,000, and the board was told that it should be installed by the end of school. Head football coach Jason Hathcoat told the board that he was getting financial sponsors from the community to help offset costs.

For the renovation, the board first had to hire an architect and a construction manager. Also by unanimous vote they approved hiring of architect Craig Boone and construction manager Scott Howard, who built the new K-12 school facility. Supt. Billy Lee explained to the board that someone for the two positions had to be hired before the board could vote on the new turf. Lee said that the existing turf field is 12 years old and is at its end of life.

The remodeled stadium will include new restrooms, ticket office, a two-tier pressbox, sidewalk and fencing. Total cost of both projects will be slightly more than $1 million.

The board heard reports by elementary principal Ruby Dean and high school principal Jondavid Amerson. The school calendar for 2023-24 was approved, and board members approved a proposed salary schedule for the next year. Supt. Lee explained how the pay for certified and classified personnel was spread to meet legislative guidelines.

Board president Dorothy Vaughn presided; and in attendance were board members Ray Hawkins, Ricky Gamble, Shelia Jackson, William Dixon, Barnado Thomas and Mike Erwin.
