Obituary: Guy Walker ‘Gary’ Segrest

Guy Walker “Gary” Segrest, 74, formerly of Nashville died Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2022.

He was born on May 15, 1948, in Corpus Christi, Texas, to Guy Walker Segrest, Jr., and Dorothy Lee Segrest. He was the oldest of four boys (Gaylan Segrest, Gerald Segrest, and Grayson Segrest).

He was head football coach at Nashville for 21 years and was also coach at Mineral Springs, among his coaching stops.

He was a graduate of Henderson State University where he competed in football, swimming, and track. In college he earned nine varsity letters, was chosen to play in the AIC All Star football game, was awarded Outstanding Offensive Player as well as All Conference in football. He served as both head coach and assistant coach for several High School All Star teams. He received Arkansas Football Coach of the Year in 1983 and the Lowell Manning award in 1984. He was inducted into the Arkansas High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2019.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Jan Segrest; daughters Jeni Davidson (Brian) and Katie Kirkland (Skylar); also grandchildren.

He was a member of First Baptist Church of Hot Springs. Visitation was Monday, Dec. 19 at First Baptist Church in Hot Springs followed by his celebration of life at 11 a.m. A family burial will be held at Walnut Hill Cemetery in Bradley, Ark.
