BROCKWELL – Three local schools participated in the Class A State Tournament held at ICC in Izard County on Thursday. For full recaps, please see next week’s Glenwood Herald.
KIRBY TROJANS VS JASPER PIRATES
In the first game involving a local team, the Kirby Trojans pulled out a first round win in a 49-45 overtime over the Jasper Pirates.
Kirby fell behind 9-2 to start the game, but surged to a 12-11 lead at the end of the first.
The game remained close the whole way, tied at 21 by half and with Kirby holding a slim 30-28 at the end of three.
The Trojans used a 9-0 run, including 7 of those from Lee Whisenhunt, in overtime to take control and go on for the win.
Kirby will face Guy Perkins on Friday at 2:30 in the second round of the playoffs.
CADDO HILLS LADY INDIANS VS KINGSTON LADY YELLOWJACKETS
The Caddo Hills Lady Indians fell behind early and were unable to come back in their state tilt with Kingston, falling 59-47.
The loss ends the Lady Indians’ successful 2015-2016 season at 22-13.
KIRBY LADY TROJANS VS SACRED HEART LADY REBELS
The Kirby Lady Trojans opened their second round game against Sacred Heart on a 18-2 run and never looked back.
Kirby led 20-8 at the end of one, with only Taylor Usery keeping Sacred Heart in the game with all 8 of their points.
At half the Lady Trojans led the Lady Rebels 30-17. Kallee Cowart posted 12 points in the first half with six rebounds; Brooke Mitchell added 9 on 7/8 free throws in the opening stanza. Kirby forced Sacred Heart into 9 first half turnovers.
Kirby came out of the second half not letting up, opening the score to 38-19 and closed the period 45-24.
The game was forced into a running clock in the fourth as Kirby opened a 30 point lead before closing the game 60-33.
Cowart finished with 20 points and eight rebounds, while Gracen Smith added 11.
The Lady Trojans will play again in the state semi-finals on Saturday at 12 noon. Wonderview and Jasper play on Friday for the right to face the Kirby.
