Lions, Junior Lions defeat Red Devils

web mi v mp 13MOUNT IDA – The Mount Ida boys had a good night at home last Tuesday, earning victories in the junior and senior games while the Lady Lions fell to Mountain Pine 70-27.
The Junior Lions kicked things off with a 45-30 victory over Mountain Pine.
Five different Junior Lions scored in the opening minutes as Mount Ida inched out to a 13-9 lead in the first period. The Mount Ida defense tightened up, allowing only four points in the second quarter, as the Junior Lions increased their lead to 24-13 at the half.
Mount Ida more than doubled the Red Devil effort in the third, scoring 16 to Mountain Pine’s 7. The Red Devils were able to cut into the Junior Lion lead in the fourth, but Mount Ida held on for the 15 point win.
Jonathan Lagrange scored 16 points, 14 from the floor, to lead Mount Ida in scoring. Ethan Winkley was 3-4 from the charity stripe and scored seven points. Jorge Lopez hit athree pointer on the night while scoring five. Cade Jackson and Colton Goss scored four, Austin Boone hit a three and Todd Carr, Gage Dyer and Drew Allen each scored two.
Browning was the leading scorer for Mountain Pine with eight, followed by Walpole with seven, Walker with six, J. Smith with five and Barnett with four.
Mountain Pine was able to record a win in the senior girls’ game, defeating the Lady Lions 70-27.
The Lady Lions struggled early with accuracy, scoring only four points while Mountain Pine scored 14 in the first period. The Lady Lion output improved in the second period with nine points with the Lady Red Devils scoring 20. Mountain Pine outscored the Lady Lions 36-14 in the second half to win by 43.
Lauren Wingfield hit three 3’s while leading the Lady Lions with 18 points. Patty Anne Whisenhunt scored five, Lyndsey Crutchfield scored three and Jordan Farmer scored one.
Jordan Godwin led the Lady Red Devils with 29 points and Hailee Crosby scored 21. Megan Walker scored six, Summer Godwin, Kaitlyn Miller and Brooke Meeks each scored four. Kelsie Walker scored two.
The Lions closed out the night with  a 60-48 victory over the Mountain Pine Red Devils.
The two teams battled back and forth in the first period with the quarter ending in a 14-14 tie. Mount Ida began to settle into a rhythm in the second period and entered the locker room at the half with a 32-28 lead.
Mount Ida methodically increased their lead to 49-39 in the third and ended the game with a 12 point victory.
TJ Wilson went 3-5 from the free throw line and led the Lions with 17 points. Austin McAdoo scored 12 from the floor and had 14 points. Cody Robertson hit three 3’s and scored 13, while Ty Whisenhunt scored 11. Anthony Spurling scored five.
Tyler Zander led Mountain Pine with 17, followed by Matt Snow with nine, Tyson Stewart with seven and Kyle Allen with five. Zak Gould and Chase Brown each scored four and Taylor Muse scored two.
