Pat Smith, author of “It’s All About the Food”, will be signing copies of her book Tuesday, December 15, from 1-3 p.m. at the Montgomery County Annex Building.
Smith, the chairman of Ouachita Vilage Inc. (OVI), has spent the last four years working to discover ways for people to eat and live healthier.
Her involvement with OVI, which oversees the Montgomery County Food Pantry, began shortly after the death of her husband in 2007. The pair had retired to the area shortly before he passed away. She states in the introduction to the book that she answered a call for help in the Montgomery County News for help with the local food pantry.
After taking a leadership role she discovered that many of the people being served by the food pantry needed more than food, they needed help learning a healthier way to eat.
Ouachita Village Inc. agreed with her and she traveled to Austin, Tx. She explains in her book that she chose Austin because they were one of the healthiest cities in the United States.
While in Texas she discovered several programs that she felt might help our area. One of the items she brought back with her was the idea for a community garden. Tasty Acres was created near the Annex building as the pilot garden for the project. It can be used to teach residents how to develop a garden in their own community.
As she delved deeper into the health crisis of Montgomery County she grew to realize that the knowledge she was gaining could be useful to a broader audience so she decided to sit down and put finger to keypad and write a book.
Four years later “It’s All About the Food” was published. It can be purchased on Amazon and will be available at the book signing.
All profits from the sale of the books will go to the Montgomery County Food Pantry.
