It will not be long until
Nashville will want an
electric light plant and a
system of water works.
An investment of this kind
would pay next year.
Mr. M.C. McCrary, proprietor
of the Howard
County Nurseries, was
in town Thursday and
presented The News with
some specimens of his
fruit. He had a very fine
Japanese persimmon and
several varieties of apples,
including the Texas Red,
Nickajack, Shannon Pippin
and Shockley.
(Adv.) Grand Holiday
and Excursion, Hope, Friday.
Now you will see the
finest, the world’s best,
largest and foremost exhibition
ever conceived and
exhibited. Hummel, Hamilton
& Sells. 3-Ring Circus
and Racing Hippodrome!

J.K. Pollock, a wellknown
citizen of the northern
part of Howard County,
returned yesterday from
the Old Fiddlers Contest,
which was held at Arkadelphia
where he won
first prize. Mr. Pollock is a
noted fiddler and has won
several prizes, and always
got first prize except on
one occasion.
When Mr. Pollock returned
from Arkadelphia
with his prize of $25 he
looked several years
younger than when he
went over on Sunday. The
violin he used was an old
one which he has owned
for forty years and becomes
more dear to him
each year.
(Adv.) Malto-Grapo, the
malted grape juice. For the
banquet, family table or
sick room. Highest award
at World’s Fair, 1904. For
sale by Latimer Grocer and
the Nashville Drug.

The colored citizens
of Howard County sponsored
a very fine county
fair from October 30 thru
November 1 in Nashville.
The general theme of the
fair was centered around
“making a living at home”
and the “defense of our
Great America”.
The first prize on booths
was awarded to Mineral
Springs, the second to the
Howard County Training
School, Tollette. Many
first prizes were awarded
to Center Point, Childress,
Hickory Grove and the St.
John communities on their
collection of exhibits.
Notice: All who are interested
in Ozan Cemetery
near Bingen are asked to
be present Friday afternoon
and help clean it.

Army reservists shot a
volley to honor deceased
veterans during a ceremony
Friday at the Howard
County Courthouse. The
event sponsored by the
American Legion Post,
featured the reading of
names of area veterans
who had died since Veterans
Day 1987. The NHS
band played patriotic music
and a duet version of
“Taps”. Speaker was Sen.
Neely Cassady.
Charles Jefferson, Jay
Turley and Sam Ragar of
Nashville combined to
give the Scrappers one of
their best offensive performances
in recent years in a
38-7 romp over Stamps last
Thursday. Jefferson, a 6-1,
180-pound senior fullback,
scored three times and
rushed for 62 yards, while
Turley, a 5-9, 155-pound junior
tailback, scored once
and kicked a field goal. He
also rushed for 124 yards
on 20 carries. Ragar, a 6-1,
160-pound senior, capped
two years as a steady performer
at quarterback by
guiding the Scrapper offense
to scores on its first
three passes for 51 yards
and finishing the night 3
for 4.
