NASHVILLE – The Single
Parent Scholarship Fund of
Howard County will be hosting
a fundraiser in November.
Howard County Trade Days
will be held on Sat., Nov. 14
at the Howard County Fairgrounds
in Nashville from 8
a.m. to 8 p.m.
Registration for vendors is
open now and board member
Heather Judd says spots can
be reserved for $25. “It’s not
just for professional vendors
with crafts, anyone can setup
a booth.”
The Howard County Children’s
Center will also have
a spot setup to accept used
clothing and small household
items. Any donations made
will also benefit the single
parent scholarship fund.
According to Judd, “to
receive a scholarship you
must be a single parent living
in Howard County.
It can be used at any school
and normally is $500 per semester.
The more money we
raise, the more scholarships
we can award.”
Single Parent Scholarships
are given to low-income single
parents who are pursuing
post-secondary education
in preparation for skilled
employment.
Scholarship Funds are
administered by affiliate organizations
and volunteers
in each county of Arkansas.
Nearly one in five Arkansas
families are led by single parents,
of which 76 percent are
single mothers.
An estimated 55 percent
of single-parent families are
officially below the poverty
line (2013 American Community
Survey).
Arkansas SPSF believes
that single-parent families
that are led by skilled and
educated mothers and fathers
have a much greater
opportunity to achieve self
sufficiency and a better quality
of life, generation after
generation.
“I think it will be good food,
fun, and have neat things to
buy. I think everyone will
have a good time,” Judd said.
