MURFREESBORO – Crater of Diamonds State Park maintenance staff have been working diligently to install eight new diamond marker panels in the diamond search area.
According to interpreter Betty Coors, the interpretive staff began research and planning for the new markers in 2014 and the work was completed late last week. Although markers were previously present on the field, they were in a state of disrepair and in need of replacement, according to Park Superintendent Caleb Howell.
“The new markers are more notable and call attention to the story of some of the park’s more famous diamond finds,” Howell said.
The new markers feature color photos of the diamonds, as well as a brief history of each. They are located on over-sized shovels throughout the diamond search area, marking approximately where each diamond was discovered. The shovels were fabricated by some of the talented members of the park maintenance staff.
“The completion of this project is a credit to our park maintenance staff’s abilities,” Assistant Park Superintendent Bill Henderson said. “It is something we have needed for a while and will be a great benefit for our visitors.”
