The Howard County Courthouse will soon see an upgrade to its heating system courtesy of a grant from the Arkansas Department of Heritage. County Judge Kevin Smith announced Monday that the county has been awarded $170,000 to replace its current boiler system with a network of heat pumps and to install a dehumidifier in the building’s basement. Smith said the current system was installed in 1974 and has been the subject of some concern for local officials who feared records might be damaged if the copper pipes which currently transport heat to different parts of the building develop leaks. According to Smith, work on the improvements is expected to begin soon and should be complete before the end of summer.
