Scrapperette senior Timya Sanders signed a letter-of-intent Friday morning to play basketball at Southern University in Shreveport.
Sanders was the Scrapperettes’ leading rebounder and second leading scorer, according to Coach Ron Alexander. “The main thing is her height. She handled the middle for us,” Alexander said.
Athletic Director James “Bunch” Nichols said Friday was “a pretty special day for us. We’re very proud that Timya will continue to play basketball at Southern. We’re tickled for her to have this chance to further her education.”
Southern Coach Shayla Canady is in her first year at the D-1 junior college, which competes in the Mississippi-Louisiana Conference.
“This is my first year to recruit players. Timya is a member of my first team. She’s a very good kid from a good home. She has a good support system at school. I want to get good kids,” Canady said.
Sanders will report to campus July 6 for the second summer term.
She chose Southern after visiting the school because “it’s not too big. It’s not too small. It feels homey.” She plans to major in nursing.
