Thirty-nine students completed Nashville High School’s summer ACT program June 3-7.

Because of the new extended-year school calendar which will begin in July, ACT school was only one week long this year. Hours were extended to allow for the shorter duration.

Teachers included the following: Scott Horne, science; Aleshia Erwin, math; Julie Wakley, reading; Holly Couch, English.\ \

All of the teachers have many years’ experience helping students improve\their ACT scores.

Students took two practice tests during the one-week\period. They also took a practice test during the last week of school in May to give them extra practice.

Teachers scored the tests, and then students rotated to each teacher in the afternoon and reviewed each section to see what they missed, why they missed certain questions, and how to correct errors.\

On non-test days, students rotated to all four teachers in the mornings and the afternoons.\

Students learned about what kinds of questions are prominently featured on the ACT and how to recognize patterns in questions.\

Teachers also provided test-taking skills and time management strategies.

Students had lots of practice and opportunities to prepare to do their best on the ACT.\ They took the ACT on Saturday, June 8, this year, the day immediately following the end of ACT school.\

“We believe this is their best opportunity\to make the highest score possible. We are looking forward\to seeing their scores in a few weeks and celebrating their higher scores with them,” said Couch, ACT school teacher and director.

“The ACT school staff members appreciate [Superintendent Doug] Graham and the school board for continuing to approve ACT school. We know how many students have benefited\from it through the years,” Couch said.

In the upcoming academic year, there will be an abbreviated ACT school during the October break.

“Students who plan to take the October ACT can take advantage of this three-day refresher before they take the ACT,” according to Couch.
